The next Pixel Soldiers game will be released in 2016 and will be based on the First World War.
For some time I’ve been adapting the Pixel Soldiers engine for modern war, or more specifically, the First World War. There’s a big jump in the way war was fought from the Napoleonic and mid 19th Century eras compared to the 20th century. Tanks, trenches, planes, machine guns and more! I’m going to try my best to get the First World War game finished and released before the end of the year (probably in December). If you want to know more, let me know in the comments below.

Wow that looks awesome! It definitely fills a niche market in the realm of strategy games. If I’m not mistaken, I see the landing of Galipoli in that first screenshot.
I’d love to know more.

Thanks Emilio! Yep, Anzac Cove on Gallipoli. Well spotted! Let me know if there’s anything else you want to know.

You go war dog!
Please tell us more..any chance of avid fans getting a battle demo or something..bayonet, anything?

Thanks, if there’s anything you want to know then let me know. A demo is an interesting idea. I might release an alpha demo when it’s in a more playable state.

I know it’s an obscure battle but will…. Battle for Lake Tanganyika….be included?
Kris · October 27, 2016 at 5:56 pm
Don’t know much about that one. Is there a reason you want that battle included?

Some historians would say that due to the time lines of events, the first naval engagements of WWI was not in the oceans, but the lakes of Africa. Almost all games of this nature exclude these battles…not surprising..not long encounters, using 1 or 2 vessels. I just find any obscure event, overshadowed by a bigger event to be interesting…and, if it was such a big deal to me, I’d learn how to make games myself. Nope, I’ll stick to trappin, you stick to game makin..we both seem pretty good at what we do.

Ok, thanks. There were a few battles in the Bull Run game that were quite obscure so I don’t mind taking a look. There are so many battles to choose from during the First World War though!

A rather fun battle, although I think quite too small for this game (after all no more than 6 ships were involved).

Agreed!

What kinds of cavalry mechanics are you going to be looking at if any?
I understand that cavalry had an extremely limited role in ww1 so are they going to only be for specific battles and how will they differ in behaviour from earlier cavalry troops?
Kris · October 27, 2016 at 10:18 pm
That will take some play testing, but cavalry will be included. They might be limited to a reconnaissance role and probably won’t have much of a role in the Western Front battles once the trenches set in. Let me know if you have any other ideas on cavalry.

I think one idea might be to allow for a mounted infantry type service. Have them be able to dismount from their mounts to fight as infantry, giving them a kind of mobile reserve role.
Kris · October 28, 2016 at 4:45 pm
I abstracted that idea in the Civil War games, rather than having a mount/dismount ability, mainly because the cavalry almost always always moved on horse back and then fought on foot. That’s why in the Civil War games they have similar stats as skirmisher units when actually fighting. Maybe I over simplified that part of the game too much!

Will you be updating the game to include more battles now that the game is already released?
Kris · March 16, 2017 at 7:07 pm
I may be doing that at some point. Pixel Soldiers Gettysburg recieved new scenarios after its release.
