Looks like WW2 won the poll pretty handily, huh Kris? Love the games, the Great War and both civil war games the most but Saratoga and Waterloo cool too!September 23, 2017 at 10:32 pm #773
Yep, looks like WW2 is winning, so there probably will be a WW2 game at some point. May not be the next game though!October 30, 2017 at 7:30 pm #774
Huge fan of the series, I own them all on android! Question, would you be interested in some help regarding the WW2 game?
I'm pretty good at pixel art and I'd really enjoy just working on a game (since i'm a somewhat new programmer but skilled none the less) for the sake of experience. Also, I'm somewhat a history buff and I love tabletop gaming, so I could suggest loads of ideas and concepts that'd make the game interesting and more intense, especially if we're dealing with WW2.
Below is a sample of some art I threw together in a few minutes. I know they're larger than the average work for this series, but I feel like WW2 would be more tactical so you'd need to differentiate between units and weapon types, I could go into detail if interested. Also rather than just doing one game, why not make it split up by years with campaigns so you can focus in on the vehicles, technology and factions with fleshed out support. Like, a Spanish Civil War game where you can recruit units from the Republic (CNT, POUM, Republican Militia) and the Nationalist Alliance (Carlists, Falange, Italian volunteers, Kondor Legion). Also, Winter War!!! WINTER WARRR!!!
Also, maybe you could add in a system so if you owned the previous game and have/had it installed you can import units from one game to another. Sorta like Panzer General but you keep the experienced troops. For instance, playing the Winter War Campaign allows you to level up troops, and in 1941 during Barbarossa you could recruit your Finnish Units via Division Nord in the Continuation War forces, as for the USSR it'd simply be importing the same units with just newer gear. Maybe use a RNG to generate distinct names so the player feels more involved.
But yeah, totally hit me up if you need any help! I want to just get experience working on indie games so i can make one eventually!November 2, 2017 at 1:07 pm #775
Nice sprite designs! Thanks!
Always happy to hear ideas so I'll be grateful if you let me know.
If I work on a WW2 game (which is quite likely) it will probably be split into campaigns, rather than trying to squeeze the whole war in a single game. Starting out by making a Spanish Civil War game would be rather apt, since historically it was used as a tactical testing ground by some of the major powers. That's an interesting idea.
The ability to advance units from one game to another would be quite difficult to implement. Not sure how to do that off the top of my head. If people play through the campaigns in the wrong order that could also cause a problem. Something I can think about doing within each individual game though. I have been thinking of ways to add some kind of advancement.
Thanks for the ideas and let me know if you have think of anything else that you would like to share. 🙂November 2, 2017 at 8:15 pm #776
Well, to implement the 'transfer units' thing you could always make the WW2 game one large release for free with the Spanish Civil War as the campaign, which would give players the POUM (Russian units that carry over), International Brigade Veterans (UK/USA/French carry over units) and either Condor Legion or Blue Division (Axis carryovers). Yet release the actual war in DLC format starting with like Poland vs Germany 1939 Blitzkrieg, France/UK vs Germany 1940's Blitzkrieg, Finland vs USSR Winter War, Germany vs USSR 1941 Blitzkrieg, then split it into the African Campaign, Mediterranean and so on and so fourth.
I guess you could make it so each purchase gives you another core unit type, like 1939 would give the player access to the Polish Paratroopers for future UK campaigns. 1940's would give the UK French soldiers and Axis Vichi France units like the Charlemagne Division. Winter War would give Axis Division Nord and the USSR would get Winter War Veterans. Essentially by owning the DLC's your unit roister would grow larger with each purchase without being historically inaccurate. Suppose it's a cheap marketing ploy but I think it'd be nice since it encourages people to own the entire game and it also creates a nice feeling of accomplishment where you can carry your favorite units over into other games.
Also, I'd love to throw ideas out there! WW2 hex games are my favorite and I really want to make my own so it'd be cool just getting experience. If you want my discord it's Sepp #0909November 3, 2017 at 11:07 pm #777
Thanks again for the ideas! You obviously know your stuff!
I have been thinking of moving to a free to play style system, where the first campaign is free and has DLC campaigns. This would make games bigger, but it's certainly something that can be experimented with. I know many people who play these games dislike some aspects of free to play games (myself included) but I think it can be done in a way where players aren't manipulated out of their money.
I don't have a discord account right now, but I can be reached on the following…

Or hope to update The Great War，Add to the three new Sandbox in GettysburgNovember 7, 2017 at 6:01 pm #779
Probably will be a big update to The Great War game before embarking on the next adventure. 🙂November 21, 2017 at 6:22 am #780November 21, 2017 at 10:01 pm #781
Sorry for the wait. I built the engine that Pixel Soldiers runs on from scratch and sometimes I need to maintain it which takes some time. The Great War is getting my full attention now so it shouldn't be too much longer. I hope you'll like all the new features in the next update. 🙂December 24, 2017 at 2:27 pm #782
Oh shoot! Sorry, was afk for a few months, what's been going on?December 30, 2017 at 1:39 am #783
Hi there! No new games out yet. Should have something new to add to the Great War game soon. Not certain on what will happen after that, but there will probably be a WW2 game not far down the line.January 20, 2018 at 7:54 am #784
I am really excited for the new game. If you need any suggestions I have a bunch up my sleeve, and I am excited to see what happens with the current games, and the newer games that might be coming out.January 20, 2018 at 11:22 pm #785
Always happy to hear suggestions! 🙂January 21, 2018 at 4:21 am #786
I heard somewhere that you had some trouble on air power. I was thinking of a layer type thing where you go to ground layer and air layer by pressing a button and it would take you in between two different layers? And to make things seem more realistic, instead of having the planes stay in one spot the whole time, you could make it so that after every turn, it would all go forward to simulate watching planes fly back and forth? You can command them to bomb a certain location once they fly over that location in the air layer? I don't know a better way to put this, probably because I'm on my phone right now. But if you want to hear more, you could certainly ask and I'll try my best to explain.
